Manuscript Assessment

The Longer The Book, The More You Save

We have been working with writers for nearly ten years and of all the services on offer, the manuscript assessment is by far the most valuable. Not only does it give authors a fresh perspective on their current project, it highlights where further professional development is needed in the craft of writing, enabling authors to grow and excel.

Our personal practice is to provide an assessment that is constructive, supportive and honest, never shying away from telling it the way it is and always offering suggestions for development and improvement.

The assessment takes the form of a two-part report:

Part 1: Margin Notes

Your manuscript will be fully annotated with notes as the read takes place. This will give you a great idea of how the book will be viewed by readers, what is and isn’t working, holding a mirror up to the project for an objective viewing. Some assessors opt not to present their initial notes to authors in this way, simply using them to inform their assessments, but they are an essential component of this service, allowing authors to see comments in action, using concrete examples.

Part 2: The Assessment

The final assessment that you will receive is divided into sections, focussing on key narrative elements. This is the document that pulls together the margin notes to give you an overview of the strengths and weaknesses of the project, from which you can then make the necessary alterations if needed. The assessment explores character and plot development, your execution of dialogue, POV, pacing and structural strategies, as well as your unique voice and use of language; additionally, you will receive comments and suggestions on the subject of marketability, your potential audience and the next steps for you to take in your publishing career.
